This page contains words and terms that are commonly used (or mis-used) in the Christian Church. Our goal is to offer simple definitions with explanation where needed, as well as some background when appropriate. We feel that the more you know, the better you are able to share the Word of God and defend the faith.

Angel:
Ang = messanger
El = God
Messanger of God. "Angel" does not always mean a "Heavenly being", but usually it does. Heavenly beings often appear as humans, as in the account of Sarah and Abraham in Genesis 18
Apologetics:
The systematic argumentative discourse in defense (as of a doctrine)
A branch or practice of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity
Apologist:
One who speaks or writes in defence of something
Apostle:
from the Latin and Greek: apostolus or apostolos respectively.
One sent on a mission (as a missionary is sent), "Sent one"
A specific group of men who were hand picked by Jesus to carry His message to the world. (The 12 apostles: Paul was chosen on the Damascus Road by the Risen Christ, after His ascension into Heaven.)
Disciple:
A person who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another
a) one of the twelve in the inner circle of Christ's followers according to the Gospel accounts
b) a convinced adherent of a school or individual
Polemicist:
One who agressively argues against and disputes false doctrine : DISPUTANT
Repentance:
To literally "turn around", or to move away from former sin in thought and deed. One must first sin in order to repent. Christians are called to repentance throughtout the bible, notably in Matthew 9:13
Sin:
To miss the mark, be impure, walk outside of God's perfect will.
Transgression:
Willfully acting in defiance of God's will.
